IB Art Junior Summer Project

Museum Visit

Do NOT WAIT UNTIL AUGUST TO START THESE!

It is crucial for you to expose yourself to the work of professional artists.
Over the summer break you should visit an ART MUSEUM! There are many local art museums around Dallas and Fort Worth. There are some suggestions below of some great art museums below. Think about carpooling and going as a group for more fun. Make sure to check the website before you go to check out special exhibitions and make sure they are open the day you visit.

  • Dallas Museum of Art: free admission every day. Student discounts available for special exhibitions.
  • Crowe Museum of Art: free admission every day. Across from the DMA and the Nasher. Focus on Asian art.
  • Meadows Museum of Art at SMU: $10 for adults and $4 for students. Free on Thursday after 5 pm. Focus on Spanish artists and artwork.
  • Amon Carter Museum: free admission every day.
  • Kimbell Art Museum: free admission. Student discounts available for special exhibitions. Monet exhibit coming soon.
  • The Modern: $4 for students.

Don’t forget that a student ID usually gets a deep discount or free admission so don’t forget it.

Be sure to include an exhibit ticket or brochure in additions to sketches and notes about the experience.

You will need to prepare a 2-3 page write up about your experience. If the exhibit/museum allows photos please take some photos of the artwork or surroundings that inspire or intrigue you (if they don’t allow photography make sure to take note of the names of the artworks so we can look them up later).

This is NOT an essay. You can include sketches, drawings, personal notes (relevant to school). It is important to think about how the experience will impact your future art making. Check the Google link for some good examples of previous workbook write ups.

Reflect on artists, specific thing you saw at the museum, and think about how the experience can impact your own art making. What did you aesthetically like and what did you dislike? Think analytically- more than descriptive what you liked and didn’t like. How can other artist’s work impact your own? Were there social/cultural influences? You should have at least 2-3 full pages that are insightful, detailed and creative.

Just a few more things…

You need to buy your workbook this summer to start working on your museum project write up. The workbook MUST a hard bound (not spiral) 8.5X11” sketchbook. This can be purchased at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I’ve put an example below with a 40% coupon. The workbook makes up 40% of your IB Art score and will be submitted with your studio pieces at the end of your senior year. Number each page (front and back) in the whole entire book.

Leave the FIRST TWO PAGES BLANK and start the museum write up after that.

This is a balance of creative, analytical, and descriptive writing and visual additions that can be photos, drawings, sketches, etc. The pages should turn into works of art themselves that are inviting and interesting to look at. The purpose of the workbook is to document your processes and progress. The workbook will be the way that IB assesses the ways you develop and work towards producing work. It focuses on the use of materials, ideas, and practices.
