McCoy Kindergarten Learns Fire Safety

On Oct. 12, the Kindergarten class at McCoy Elementary got to meet another community helper. Brad Hurtt, from the Mesquite Fire Department, visited with the class and explained what his job entails. Mr. Hurtt put on his fire gear and let students see what a firefighter looks like when battling a fire. While wearing his breathing tank, students could hear what the breathing apparatus sounds like. The demonstration was intended to alleviate fears many young children have when they encounter a firefighter in full gear. To further alleviate those fears, Mr. Hurtt handed his gear to Ms. Sughrue to put on. Demonstrating how a firefighter may enter a burning structure, Ms. Sughrue crawled on the floor with the gear on.
