Students identified as Gifted and Talented have the option to attend SAGE at Perry Middle School during the summer. Students in grades 5-7 in SAGE 5-7 class are collaborating to make a Rube Goldberg machine. Rube Goldberg, was a cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor. Goldberg is best known for a series of popular cartoons depicting complicated gadgets that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways, giving rise to the term “Rube Goldberg machines” for any similar gadget or process. Using cardboard, plastic cups, tape, wood, pulleys, and other objects, students in SAGE 5-7 are building their own version of a Rube Goldberg machine they plan on presenting to the open house on June 29. This is just one of many projects these students engage in as they solidify their understanding of more complex topics for their age-group. SAGE classes will continue through June 29.
