Millions of people in more than 100 countries celebrated World Read Aloud Day on February 16. This day brings together children, teens, and adults to celebrate the power of the spoken word.
Readers are taking action to show the world that the right to literacy belongs to all of the people. When you read, you are standing up for everyone’s right to read. Reading does not discriminate a child’s race, culture, or economic standing.
Riverchase Makes World Read Aloud Day Special
Riverchase Elementary in CFBISD was one of many campuses across the district that participated in the event. Staff members from around the school dressed as their favorite literary character from their favorite book. All involved had fun.
Students at Riverchase Elementary also learned valuable lessons about the importance of reading. The day emphasized the impact reading has on future success. Despite the overwhelming evidence for the importance of reading, we are still seeing declines in reading in students across the country.
How Reading Impacts Children
The Kids and Family Reading Report shows there has been a significant drop in the frequency of reading to children over the age of five and eight. The World Read Aloud Day helps families realize the importance of reading aloud to their children and enjoying time together as a family.
“Data from the Kids & Family Reading Report reveals just how much parents and kids value time spent reading together. Besides being joyful, reading aloud to children at an early age—and even after children can read aloud on their own—can have a profound effect on children’s language and literacy development and support their ability to think critically and communicate effectively. We are pleased to help spread these important messages to families, children and educators around the world on World Read Aloud Day.” – Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO of Scholastic
