Congratulations to Newman Smith Senior, Jason Zhang.  The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that Jason Zhang is a Finalists in the 2017 Competition for National Merit Scholarship honors.  Zhang, one of the top secondary science students in America, was the overall UIL Science Champion (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) in 2016.  Also, Jason earned a first place award in Physics at UIL Competition in 2016. On a national level Jason Zhang earned a Silver Medal at the U.S. Physics Olympiad and was ranked No. 4 in the United States in Chemistry via the National Chemistry Olympiad in 2016.  Zhang has earned a near perfect score on the SAT examination.
The National Merit Scholarship Program earlier this month selected Finalists for the 2017 competition from about 16,000 Semifinalists named in September of 2016. Â National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists honors are based on a student’s performance on the PSAT exam in their junior year of high school. Â To earn National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists honors a student must exhibit exemplary academic achievement during their high school career.
Newman Smith National Merit Commended Scholars for 2017 are Chisara Campbell, Emily Clark and Julien Tagnon.
